December 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

John Wychoff plays in the singles semifinal while club members enjoy some doubles at the Christmas party at the Big Tree Inn on Dec. 16.

Over 40 members, children and guests turned out for the club’s Christmas party and Ping Pong Extravaganza Wednesday. Six ping pong tables were set up in the Inn for an evening of fierce competition in both singles and doubles.

There were 17 entires in the single elimination Singles tournament. Malachy Coyne, the son of Dave Coyne of Avon, won the tournament by defeating guest John Wychoff in the finals 2-0. New members continue to join club!

March 12, 2009 · Leave a Comment

This blog entry will announce new members who have joined the club for the 2009 season and those who have renewed their memberships. Currently, there are 21 new family members and 37 renewals for a total of 58 tennis family memberships signed up for this year! We also have our first non-tennis playing member.

We have our first new member under the club’s Fall Special. Bob Begg of Geneseo has joined the club and will begin playing in the Fall Doubles League. Bob is a retired History teacher from Dansville Central School. His wife Nancy Laemlein was an avid player but can no longer play due to injuries.

Ed Gillin has joined the club. Ed is an English professor at SUNY Geneseo and lives in Livonia with his wife Mary who does not play.

The club had its first “walk-on” members on July 8 when Joe and Maggie Carlson noticed the new Genesee Volley sign on the gate and wandered down the driveway to investigate. Joe is an avid tennis player (USTA ranking of 4.0) and one of the leaders of a new club in Amelia Island, Florida where they recently built 5 Har-Tru courts. The couple spend 1o weeks of each summer at Loon Lake in Steuben County and will now be commuting regularly to Geneseo to play at the Volley Club!

The family of Melanie Blood and Jonathan Kruger of Geneseo have joined the club and Melanie has already begun playing Summer League tennis. They have two children Alex Kruger (8) and Miranda Blood (6) who have never played the game but may join the Quick Start Tennis program.

Jon and Bee Perkins of Geneseo have joined the club. They are transplants from England who have built a new home on the Avon Road. Bee is eager to improve her tennis skills and play lots of tennis. Jon less so.

The Ryan Chenevert family of Geneseo has joined. Ryan’s wife Saleen gave him the membership for Father’s Day after the couple’s two older children Andre ,7, and Brigitte ,5, participated in the QST workshop at Highland park.

Patti Hudak of Livonia has joined the club. She helps her husband Bob represents the Vitazyme line of natural plant growth stimulators and is very interested in nutrition. The couple have two athletic sons, Jeremy and Tristan who were three sport athletes at Livonia, but do not play tennis.

Tom Nichols of Mt. Morris has joined the club. He and his wife Nicole have two young children. Nicole age 4 and Tom Jr. age 3. Tom has already played one Winter Warrior match and can’t wait for the Spring Twilight league to start. He has been receiving instruction from club member Dave Missel in the Mt. Morris Recreational program.

The Williams family of Livonia has now joined the club. Scott and Carol and their two children Alex, a sophomore who plays #1 at Livonia High School and Mandy, a sophomore at Elmira College. Scott is a Professor at RIT and Carol is a retired swim coach and a current yoga instructor and organic gardener.

Maggie Cashman of Geneseo has joined the club as a full tennis member. She has her own executive recruiting business and is married to SUNY Geneseo psychology professor Michael Ripinski, who does not play–yet! Maggie comes from a tennis-playing family in Minnesota and is looking forward to regaining her youthful form.

Jean Lindsay of Geneseo has joined as the first non-tennis playing member. Jean is looking forward to learning the finer points of croquet once the new court is open later this summer!

Some familiar names took advantage of the club’s End-of-Season membership special last fall. Genesee Open Doubles Champions Rock Castor and Mel Bauman have both joined the club and played in the Winter Warriors Noon Doubles League.

Also joining were Sandy and Bob Wilcox of Geneseo. Sandy is an active tennis player, and although Bob has not played in many years, he is hoping that his recent shoulder surgery will allow him to return to the court next year.

Other new members include Mike and Miriam Dabramo of Warner Road in Geneseo. They look forward to playing next year with their daughter Liz. Mike is a long-time squash player and Miriam is the sister of new member Rock Castor.

Another new family joining is Peg and Scott Proctor of Livonia. They are retired and recently moved to the area from Webster. They are looking forward to meeting other tennis players. Peg is a former high school tennis coach who has been sidelined for a few years due to a arm injury. There son Matt, who is 27, lives in Denver and may play some family tennis when he is in town.

Also joining are John and Mary Kay Yanik of LeRoy. Mary Lou is an attorney formerly in the Livingston County Public Defenders Office and now practicing at 3134 Geneseo Road, Mount Morris. Both John and Mary Kay describe themselves as “average” tennis players, but say their son, Dan, age 21, is a very good player.

Also joining is Nick Waddy of Geneseo. Nick played at Geneseo Central where he graduated in 1992. He is currently a professor of History and Political Science at Alfred State College.

Hans Kunze of Wyoming has joined the club. He is recuperating from a broken leg recently suffered while playing basketball but hopes to be able to play tennis by springtime. Hans is a loan officer at Steuben Trust in Geneseo and a well-known birder. His wife Leslie also plays and they hope to get their three children ages 8,12,and 14 involved.

Dennis Canary of Rochester has also joined the club. Dennis is an accountant at the firm of Ladelfa, Schoder and Walker in Mt. Morris. He has an avid tennis player with a NTRP rating of 4.0. His partner Anna Bowne also plays.

Just beating the deadline was Barry Cross who paid his membership dues at a New Year’s Eve party just a few minutes before Midnight! Barry lives on Conesus Lake in Geneseo0 and is looking forward to tennis season.

Also beating the deadline is Terri Book of Geneseo. Terri is a stalwart of the local women’s tennis scene.

Court opens for season with new reservation system

April 8, 2009 · Leave a Comment

The Main Court at the club is now open for play and can be booked online by any member through a new online reservation system. We have switched to a system offered by Clickbook.net mainly because it is free. The system appears to have every basic feature that we need and we will try it for a while to see if members like it. Unfortunately, at the moment, the feature offering online feedback to the club does not appear to be working, so please tell Biff directly or by e-mail if you have an issue with the system.

A word of warning: Although the system carries no advertising and does not appear to be pushing an upgrade to a paid version, it seems that its economic strategy is to encourage you to receive text message notices and reminders of appointments through your cell phone. (Perhaps it is owned by a consortium of wireless carriers!) We have tried to turn that feature off from the system end, however, you must also uncheck that option the first time you make an appointment, or else you will receive text messages. (You can opt to receive all your notices by e-mail and also change your preferences at any time if you forget to do this when you set up your account.)

Courts can be booked for 90 minute periods from 8 am to 5 pm seven days a week. As the days get longer and Twilight League play begins, we will eventually offer a 6:30 pm booking. At this point, I would like to reserve the 12:30 and 5pm times on weekdays for Winter Warrior League play, so if you attempt to book those times it will not be confirmed unless there is no league match scheduled for that day. Other then that, feel free to reserve and enjoy the court on a first come, first serve basis!

As times are booked they will no longer be shown as available in the system, so if you need to cancel please do so through the system. Simply log in and click the link that says Booking Centre. (The spelling of Centre indicates that Clickbook is a British company, or perhaps Australian). This will allow you to review and cancel your existing appointments. Currently we have the system set to allow you to book courts up to two weeks in advance.

It will make Biff’s life easier if everybody learns to book their own courts. If you are computer challenged, or not near a computer when you need to book a court, you may call Biff at 233-5338 and he will book it for you. The system will eventually allow you to book lessons and clinics, however, those will not start until May. Watch this blog for further details.

You should probably bookmark the system so you can get to it quickly. If you forget, the actual address to get there is http://www.GENESEEVOLLEYTENNISC.clickbook.net

Have fun!

Over 75 club members (along with more than a dozen children) were joined by about 50 non-member guests at the club’s first ever Summer Picnic and benefit. $500 was raised for the Teresa House from tickets, a 50-50 drawing and t-shirt sales.

A catered Chicken BBQ dinner was prepared by Paul Teed of Livonia which featured sweet corn and potatoes grown on the Free Soil Farm at the Hartford House. All 125 chickens ordered were devoured as well as 150 ears of corn that had been picked and shucked by a volunteer crew of club members.

Musical entertainment was provided by Buzzo’s All-Stars, who were introduced by local undertaker Frank Hicks who did a short comedy routine. In honor of the party’s Woodstock theme, Frank suggested that everybody should take off their clothes and slide in the mud!

Plans for tennis games of skill were displaced after a heavy downpour caused an unscheduled two hour intermission in the 3rd set og the club’s doubles final. For complete club tournament results, click the link at right

Despite the weather, the skies cleared for a evening of fun highlighted by the torching of a large bonfire in the pasture just west of the new lawn court. Club President Biff Strong explained that a large dead oak tree at the center of the fire was being removed to make room for additional tennis courts, that he hopes the club will build someday.

Finalists in the 2009 Doubles Club Championship

Finalists in the 2009 Doubles Club Championship: (from left) Carlo Filice, Rock Castor, Mel Bauman and Biff Strong.

In Men’s Doubles, the # 1 seeded doubles team of Mel Bauman and Rock Castor prevailed over the #3 team of Carlo Filice and Biff Strong in a three set match Sunday interrupted by a 2-hour rain delay. Filice and Strong surprised the top seeds by reeling off 7 straight games to come back from a 4-1 first set deficit and take a second set lead. Cupola is restored to clubhouse roof

Contractor and club member Todd Cole installed a new cupola on the roof of the former ice house that serves as the club’s tennis house last week. The cupola was built by local woodworker Ken Richardson of Geneseo last winter and replaces the original which was too badly weathered to be restored.

Just like the original, the new cupola is open into the interior of the building  to allow for ventilation. The four open sides of the cupola are screened to prevent birds from nesting and prohibit access to the building by other animals. In the winter, those openings will be covered with plexiglass.

Although Ken and his wife Sue are not tennis players, they have been granted a Lifetime Honorary Membership for their extensive donation of volunteer labor. The club’s entire cost for building the cupalo was only $250 for materials.

Club member Todd Cole of Geneseo also donated his labor for the installation of  the cupola. Todd is an excellent tennis player who played for York Central School. We hope to coax him on to the court some day if he can find time away from his busy contracting business!

If you see them, please thank Ken and Todd for their excellent work!

Mixed Doubles Challenge Ladder

May 18, 2009 · Leave a Comment

So far, we have only had three teams sign up for the Mixed Doubles Challenge Ladder and I have seeded them as follows:

1. Carlo & Karen Filice
2. Jerry Doberstein & Mary Kennedy
3. Dave & Carole Missel
4. Fred Mingrino and Sharon Presutti
5. Heather and Richard Burke

Play is now open and new teams that sign up will be put on the bottom of the ladder. Club members can play with any other member of the opposite gender, however, you can only play with one partner at a time. Here are the rest of the rules:

Mixed Doubles Challenge Ladder Rules

1. Teams may challenge those who are up to two spots above them on the ladder. Teams must accept challenges from those up to two spots below them.

2. All challenge matches shall be best two out of three sets with tiebreakers in all sets. All challenge matches must be played on the club court. This is a clay court ladder!

3. Challenge matches can be scheduled at any time other than times reserved for twilight double league play (noon and after 5 pm weekdays). Teams are responsible for booking the court time on the online court reservation system at http://geneseevolleytennisc.clickbook.net

4. Failure of a higher ranked team to schedule a match within two weeks of a first challenge shall result in a default. A defaulting team does not earn the right of re-match described in paragraph 5 below.

5. If a lower ranked team wins the challenge match they move up into the place on the ladder occupied by the higher ranked team. If the match went to three sets, the winning team must offer the formerly higher ranked team a re-match before challenging any other higher ranked team. If the losing team declines the re-match, is unable to schedule it within one week of the original match or if the winning team wins the rematch, the winning team may then challenge a team up to two spots above them.

6. If the higher ranked team wins the initial challenge match, they have the right to challenge a higher ranked team before accepting a rematch from the losing team. In such a case, the higher ranked team can not be re-challenged by the losing team until two weeks after the date of the first match. If, at the expiration of the two week period, the winning team is then more than two spots ahead of the losing team, a challenge can not be made.

7. Players shall warm-up for no more than 10 minutes. If the match is not complete at the expiration of the 90 minute time slot it may continue if the court has not been reserved by anyone else. If the court is reserved, the players may complete the current set they are playing. If that does not finish the match, the completion of the match must be rescheduled, and the players will resume play at the same score as when play was suspended.

8. If bad weather occurs, the match may be canceled or suspended on the request of any player. If the match is suspended, it will resume at the same score as it stood at the time of suspension.

9. All results shall be reported to Biff and will be published on the club blog. Biff shall be the sole arbitrator about the interpretation of the rules and his decisions on any dispute arising over these rules are final and binding on all players. These rules are subject to change at any time.

10. Nothing about this club ladder shall be construed as preventing club members from arranging to play non-challenge mixed doubles matches at their option.
